Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider described Max Scherzer's outing with the Buffalo Bisons last Friday as "the most watched Triple-A game in a while for me."
Schneider's comments highlighted just how significant Wednesday's rehab start was for
Scherzer, who is closing in on a return to the Blue Jays' rotation after a lengthy recovery from a right thumb injury that has held him to only three innings at the major league level this season.
Blue Jays star pitcher eyes return from injury.
Speaking with reporters in his front office at Rogers Centre on Wednesday afternoon, the Blue Jays manager later revised that remark.
"Probably today's (the) second-most or maybe takes the top spot." -Schneider.
David Singh from Sportsnet writes that on Wednesday evening, Scherzer threw 4.1 innings totalling 75 pitches for the Bisons in a dominant 14-1 win over the Red Sox's Triple-A affiliate at Polar Park in Worcester, Mass.
"This marked Scherzer's second start for the Bisons, and, from both a pitch count and velocity perspective, it was an improvement over his output last Friday. The righty sat at 92.5 m.p.h. with his fastball while topping out at 94.2 m.p.h. He mixed in his curveball, cutter, changeup and slider to generate 11 whiffs on 36 swings." -Singh
The 40-year-old looked sharp in the opening frame, striking out two batters while navigating around a walk to big-leaguer Wilyer Abreu, who was also on a rehab assignment.
Overall, Scherzer delivered a dominant performance, allowing only one hit over a scoreless outing, with two walks and eight strikeouts.
"Scherzer will likely rejoin the Blue Jays for his next start, which could come on Tuesday against the Guardians in Cleveland. Given Monday's off day, that would ensure the veteran right-hander has five days of rest between outings." -Singh
Scherzer's return would give the Blue Jays a much-needed boost, finally putting an end to the bullpen games they've frequently used to cover his rotation spot since the tree-time Cy Young winner landed on the injured list back on March 30.
