The Blue Jays have agreed to a $3.2 million deal with outfielder Junior Fortunato.

The International Signing Period doesn't open until January, but agreements like this get worked out well ahead of time.

Insider Mike Rodriguez, who specializes in Dominican prospects, broke the news on X.

"Junior Fortunato: $3.2 million signing bonus with the Toronto Blue Jays for January 2027. Outfielder, five-tool player, 60+ arm, and 60+ power," Rodriguez wrote.

"A talented player with the physical ability and tools to develop into a high-level prospect."

Fortunato is set to sign at just 16 years old, meaning there isn't much public information beyond the scouting grades attached to him.

A $3.2 million bonus at that age signals real organizational belief in his ceiling, even with years of development still ahead.

Why Toronto's track record here is genuinely worrying

Toronto's recent history with big-money IFA signings hasn't gone well, and that context matters here.

The Blue Jays signed Orlevis Martinez for $3.5 million back in 2018, once considered a can't-miss prospect. He appeared in one MLB game, got suspended for PEDs, struggled to hit, and was released last September.

In 2021, Toronto gave shortstop Manuel Beltre a $2.35 million bonus as a top-25 prospect in his class. He struggled to hit too, and the Blue Jays released him this July.

Then there's Enmanuel Bonilla, signed for $4.1 million in 2023. He's still in A-ball after four years in the system, hitting below .200 in three of those four seasons.

Three high-profile bonuses, three disappointing outcomes. That's the pattern Fortunato now steps into.

None of that guarantees he follows the same path, but it does mean Toronto's international scouting department has real ground to make up on delivering results from these bonuses.

For a front office that's clearly still willing to spend at this level, hitting on one of these high-end signings would go a long way toward validating the approach.

Whether Fortunato becomes the player who finally breaks that pattern, or another name added to a growing list of disappointments, won't be known for years.
