Simeon Woods Richardson cleared waivers and is headed to Triple-A Buffalo.
He was designated for assignment last Friday to clear a roster spot for CJ Van Eyk, and the outright confirms nobody put in a claim.
Toronto originally acquired him from the Twins on June 4 for cash considerations.
He pitched in eight games for the Blue Jays this season, going 2-0 with a 3.93 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.
Fourteen strikeouts across 18.1 innings, holding opponents to a .222 average, shows real swing-and-miss ability when he was on.
Walks were the recurring issue, though. Twelve free passes in that span is a number that catches up eventually.
It did. After allowing just one earned run over his first 16.1 innings with Toronto, he was tagged for seven earned runs across his final two outings.
Why his role became expendable after Lorenzen arrived
That stretch included a brutal line against the Royals on Aug. 27, one inning, five hits, six runs, six earned, during Toronto's 13-2 blowout loss.
Michael Lorenzen's signing muddied his bullpen role further, and that ambiguity led directly to the DFA.
This marks the second time this season Woods Richardson has been designated for assignment by Toronto, and both times he's landed back in Buffalo.
Combined between the Blue Jays and Twins this season, he's 2-7 with a 6.68 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP, with 40 strikeouts over 66 innings and a .304 average against.
He's actually pitched well in Buffalo, going 2-1 with a 4.07 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP across six appearances, five as a starter.
A former No. 3-ranked prospect in Toronto's system back in 2020, Woods Richardson still has real stuff buried in there when his command cooperates.
With rosters expanding in September, he remains a real candidate for another callup if Toronto's bullpen gets overworked again down the stretch.
Whether that opportunity comes soon, or he spends the rest of the year auditioning in Buffalo, depends entirely on how the next few weeks play out for Toronto's pitching staff.
