His overall numbers with Detroit this year are more mixed. He's hitting .196 with eight home runs, 36 RBIs, and 48 walks across 81 games.
The power has dipped compared to earlier in his career, which complicates any clean evaluation of what he'd bring going forward.
Still, a 29-year-old with real defensive flexibility and a track record of quality at-bats is worth a real conversation, even with the power decline factored in.
Why the fit could make sense beyond just history
Torres has played primarily second base and shortstop over his career, giving Toronto real flexibility around its infield.
That versatility matters for a Blue Jays team that's dealt with injuries all over the infield this season, from Andres Gimenez's hamstring to Ernie Clement's various nicks.
His 48 walks this season show a hitter who still controls the strike zone well, even while the power numbers have cooled off.
Toronto's offense has needed more consistent quality at-bats all year, not just power, something Torres has shown he can provide in the right setting.
The Rogers Centre track record alone won't be the deciding factor in any real pursuit, but it's the kind of detail that gets a front office to at least explore the conversation.
Whether Detroit is even willing to move him, and at what price, remains entirely unknown at this early stage.
For a Blue Jays team that's spent this season searching for lineup answers, a player with this specific history in their own ballpark is worth watching as the offseason approaches.
