One of the Toronto Blue Jays' top prospects appears to be closing in on his major league debut, and it could come as soon as this weekend.
The Blue Jays are considering promoting left-hander Ricky Tiedemann to the majors as early as Saturday's game against the New York Yankees, according to Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith. Johnny Giunta of the Gate14 podcast was first to suggest the move.
Tiedemann, 23, was once Toronto's No. 1 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, but injuries have derailed his development significantly in recent seasons.
He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2024, missed the entire 2025 season, and was slow to build back up this year due to elbow soreness. Activated from the minor league IL on August 5th, he's made three relief appearances for Triple-A Buffalo since, allowing four runs and five hits with four strikeouts.
Tiedemann joined Jays Talk+ on Thursday and made clear he's focused on his own performance rather than the call-up speculation itself.
"It's hard not to think about how you could help the big league club in the quickest way possible, but that's more for Schneider and Pete Walker to think about," Tiedemann said. "For me it's more about going out there, throwing my game and making sure I'm getting the outs so when they do call I'm ready to go."
Why the timing lines up with Toronto's real pitching need
Toronto hasn't named a starter for Saturday's game yet, and it's expected to be a bullpen day given recent injuries to Trey Yesavage and Jameson Taillon.
That bullpen has been genuinely worn down as Toronto nears the end of a stretch of 17 games in 17 days, prompting the addition of former Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald to the relief corps on Friday.
Tiedemann's potential arrival would give Toronto another fresh arm right when it's needed most, a real boost for a pitching staff that's been stretched to its limits.
It's a bit like finally getting relief reinforcements right as the front lines are running on fumes, the timing feeling less like coincidence and more like genuine necessity.
