Here's a proposed swap that would be a genuine seismic shift for the Toronto Blue Jays, landing Yordan Alvarez from Houston.
The framework has Toronto sending Yohendrick Pinango, Jonatan Clase, Luis Urias and prospect Jake Cook to the Astros in return.
Alvarez is having an elite season, hitting .330 with 35 home runs and 77 runs scored across 111 games, numbers that put him among the very best hitters in all of baseball.
That kind of production makes any trade involving him a genuine blockbuster, regardless of what's included going the other way.
Houston sits at 58-55, first in the American League West, fresh off a 7-3 win over Texas, hardly a team looking to move its best hitter under normal circumstances.
That's the real question hanging over this idea. Why would a contending Astros team ever consider moving a player performing at this level in the first place?
For Toronto's side of the package, Pinango is hitting .260 with five home runs, Clase has been electric early at .261 with two homers in just 10 games, and Urias adds infield depth at .214 with three home runs.
Why this idea feels more speculative than realistic
None of the four names Toronto would be offering come close to matching the individual value Alvarez provides on his own, making this package look light for a hitter this dominant.
It's a bit like offering a handful of solid role players for a franchise cornerstone, the math simply not adding up without a much bigger centerpiece included.
Real trades involving a player of Alvarez's caliber typically require either years of team control changing hands in the return or genuine superstar-level talent going back, neither of which this package includes.
Would Houston ever seriously entertain moving Alvarez for a group like this, or does landing a hitter this good require an entirely different level of return than four complementary pieces?
This kind of proposal makes for fun speculation, but the gap between Alvarez's actual value and this package suggests it's much closer to fantasy than a realistic front office conversation.
