Landing CJ Abrams would be about as close to a true blockbuster as the Toronto Blue Jays could pull off at this deadline.
Abrams is putting up the best numbers of his career for Washington, hitting .294 with 27 home runs and 66 runs scored across 103 games this season.
The 25-year-old shortstop is under contract through 2029, giving any acquiring team real long-term control rather than a rental situation.
He's been on an absolute tear lately too, hitting four home runs over his last three games entering this stretch.
Washington sits at 54-52, competing for a wild card spot, which raises the obvious question of why the Nationals would even consider moving a player performing this well.
The answer comes down to timing. Moving Abrams now, before a bigger contract extension becomes necessary, lets Washington maximize his trade value while it's at its peak.
For Toronto, a deal like this would require sending real win-now talent back the other way, exactly the kind of return a Nationals front office would demand for a player this good.
Why the asking price would be enormous
A reported package includes Shane Bieber and or Kevin Gausman, along with reliever Tyler Rogers, Ernie Clement and prospect Arjun Nimmala, and even that might not be enough to get a deal done.
Rogers has been outstanding out of Toronto's bullpen, posting a 1.54 ERA across 46.2 innings, exactly the kind of proven arm a playoff-hopeful team like Washington would want.
Clement is hitting .297 with eight home runs in his own breakout season, an All-Star caliber year that makes him a genuine loss if he's included in any deal.
It's a bit like trying to buy a mansion with a stack of nice cars, the total value might be real, but it still might not add up to what the seller actually wants.
Would Toronto really part with this much talent, including a rising star like Nimmala, for one player, even a shortstop this good and this affordable long term?
Whatever happens, a trade of this magnitude would be one of the more significant moves either franchise makes in years.
