Jeremy Pena might be a more realistic target for the Blue Jays than his teammate Yordan Alvarez.
The 28-year-old shortstop has been in the trade rumor mill for a while now, and he's set to become a free agent after the 2027 season.
That timeline matters. Houston could reasonably move him now for a real return, rather than risk losing him for nothing in a year and a half.
Toronto needs a genuine boost at shortstop, and a former ALCS and World Series MVP fits that description as well as anyone on the trade market.
Pena is having a strong season for Houston, hitting .281 with 17 home runs, 46 RBIs, and 67 runs scored across 87 games.
He's been especially hot lately too, hitting three home runs over his last 10 games and driving in six runs during that stretch.
That kind of recent surge only adds to his appeal for a Blue Jays team looking to reshape its infield this winter.
Why the fit makes sense on both sides of this deal
Toronto's infield situation has been unsettled at points this season, with injuries forcing constant lineup shuffling behind the plate and around the diamond.
Adding a proven postseason performer at shortstop would give the Blue Jays real stability at a position that's needed it.
For Houston, moving Pena now while his trade value is high makes more sense than watching him walk for nothing after 2027.
A deal like this would likely require Toronto to part with real young talent, given Pena's track record and remaining contract control.
But compared to a true blockbuster for Alvarez, this feels like the kind of move a front office can realistically pull off.
Whether Houston actually engages in serious talks, or Pena ends up staying put for one more year before hitting free agency, is the question worth tracking as the offseason approaches.
