Addison Barger is out, and John Schneider now turns to Tyler Fitzgerald as the Blue Jays patch another early roster problem.
Toronto placing Barger on the injured list gives this ankle issue a heavier feel than the first update did. Just 1 day ago, Schneider was saying Barger was “trending in the right direction” even though an IL stint had not been ruled out.
That door is now open all the way, and it says plenty about where Barger's condition landed after Sunday's awkward play at first base. He hurt both ankles trying to beat out a grounder against the White Sox and was pulled from the game soon after.
For Toronto, this is not just about losing a left-handed bat. Barger had become one of the club's more useful movable pieces, able to cover right field and the infield while the lineup kept searching for steadier production.
That is why Fitzgerald makes sense as the answer. MLB.com had already identified him as the likely replacement if Barger needed the IL, with Fitzgerald traveling on the taxi squad while Toronto waited on the final call.
The timing is notable, too. Fitzgerald had only just arrived in the organization after the Blue Jays acquired him from the Giants for cash considerations on April 4 and sent him to Triple-A Buffalo.
Toronto moved fast on a roster fit it already had in mind
This is what makes the transaction feel more deliberate than desperate. Fitzgerald was not a random depth grab. He was added 3 days ago, and the Blue Jays immediately had a plug-in option once Barger's ankles failed to calm down enough for everyday use.
There is some real utility here. Fitzgerald is a right-handed hitter with big-league time, and Toronto brought him in for infield depth at a moment when the roster was already taking hits.
That matters even more because Barger's injury is not landing in a quiet week. Alejandro Kirk is already down with a thumb fracture, and the Blue Jays have spent the opening stretch churning the pitching staff just to hold the edges of the roster together.
So this move is about more than filling 1 bench spot. Schneider needs playable flexibility, and Fitzgerald gives him a cleaner path to cover innings and survive matchups while Barger heals.
For Barger, the setback stings because this looked at first like something the Blue Jays might dodge. Instead, Toronto now has to wait it out and hope the IL stay stays short.
For Fitzgerald, the opening is right there. The Blue Jays traded for him because they saw immediate value in his versatility. Now they are asking him to prove it faster than anyone expected.
