The Blue Jays have signed outfielder Sebastián Enriquez to a minor league deal. He arrives from the Diablos Rojos del México.
The move showed up on Toronto's transaction log. Enriquez is listed at 5-foot-9 and 154 pounds.
He bats and throws right-handed. That detail matters more than it might seem for this organization.
Toronto's outfield leans heavily left. Nathan Lukes, Addison Barger and Brett Bateman all hit from the left side, as do prospects Sean Keys and Yohendrick Piñango.
The right-handed options are thin. Anthony Santander switch-hits but missed all of 2026, and Davis Schneider is facing a non-tender decision.
Is Enriquez the answer to that problem? Not in 2027, and probably not anytime soon, but depth has to start somewhere.
Sebastián Enriquez adds to Toronto's wide international net
He's the latest in a string of under-the-radar additions. The Jays recently signed Venezuelan outfielder Orangel Guanaguaney, Dutch shortstop Cayro Hazel and Dominican pitcher Windel Encarnacion.
They also landed Taiwanese amateur pitcher Cai-Chen Long, their first deal with a Taiwanese amateur since 2003 by one count.
Mexico has deep Blue Jays ties this winter, too. Luis Urias is playing for the Yaquis de Obregón, while former Jays Jordan Groshans and Mallex Smith are in the Mexican Pacific Winter League.
This is the right kind of move. Minor league deals cost almost nothing, and a club that finished last in the majors in runs should be turning over every rock.
Signings like this are free samples at the grocery store. Most won't change your dinner plans, but every so often you find something worth buying in bulk.
The details of the deal weren't part of the initial transaction. His contract terms and assignment level weren't immediately available.
The path is clear but long. A minor league deal means he'll have to earn his way up the system.
Nobody is projecting him for the Rogers Centre outfield. But in a system starved for right-handed outfield bats, he'll get a look, and that's more than most minor league signings can say.
