The Blue Jays released pitcher Edgar Gallegos right before Tuesday's series opener against the Guardians.
Toronto lost that game 6-1, with Gavin Williams striking out 13 over seven innings to beat opener Spencer Miles and the Blue Jays.
But the Gallegos news came first, confirmed through the MiLB Transactions Log.
The 20-year-old, listed at 6-foot-5 and 198 pounds, was in his third season with the organization after signing a minor-league deal in March 2024.
He spent his first two years in the Dominican Summer League before reaching the Florida Complex League this season.
The numbers there weren't kind. Fourteen FCL appearances produced 16 strikeouts in 20.2 innings, but a 9.15 ERA and 2.08 WHIP tell the real story.
Thirty-six hits, 21 earned runs, and six home runs allowed add up to a rough stretch that made this release fairly unsurprising.
Why one strong outing keeps a return possible
There's a wrinkle worth noting, though. In his only appearance with High-A Dunedin this season, Gallegos looked like a different pitcher entirely.
He struck out two while allowing just one hit over three innings, earning a save in a clutch spot.
That single outing doesn't erase a rough FCL season, but it does suggest something worth another look, especially in a pressure situation.
This release doesn't necessarily connect directly to Simeon Woods Richardson electing free agency elsewhere in the organization this week.
Toronto still wants Woods Richardson in the system, just not on the active roster right now, showing multiple pitching moves can happen independently of each other.
Whether Toronto brings Gallegos back on a new deal, or this ends his time in the organization for good, the door doesn't appear fully shut based on that one Dunedin outing.
For a young arm still finding his footing, that single save might be the best argument he has for another chance somewhere down the line.
