Jazz Chisholm Jr. got booed by Yankees fans on his way out of the ALDS. The Blue Jays should only call if he wants a one-year deal this winter.

The Rays' sweep ended New York's season, and the boos made the mood plain. Chisholm has said he'd like to remain a Yankee, but that's what they all say.

The fit in Toronto looks obvious on paper. The Jays need middle-infield help, and he's a two-time All-Star just entering his prime at 28.

The 2026 numbers tell a different story. He slashed .231/.312/.399 this season.

He also struck out 157 times in 531 plate appearances. That swing-and-miss profile makes him one of the more volatile bats on the market.

The speed was still real. He stole 41 bases, though he fell well short of his much-memed 50-50 goal.

Marcus Semien's 2021 Toronto deal is the blueprint

Then came the noise. Aaron Boone was reportedly bothered by his in-game lollipop, and costly defensive errors followed him into the playoffs.

New York's media is a different animal, and some of the criticism had little to do with baseball. Still, he didn't do much to help his own cause.

Before the season, there were rumours he wanted a 10-year deal worth upwards of $30 million a year.

The Blue Jays shouldn't go anywhere near that. Speed fades with age, and a long contract built on legs and swing-and-miss could sour in a hurry.

So is there a deal worth making? Yes, a short one.

Marcus Semien took a one-year deal in Toronto in 2021 and turned it into a big payday elsewhere. Let Chisholm prove himself on that same path, then let someone else write the giant cheque.

It's the difference between renting a sports car for a summer and co-signing a 10-year loan on it. One is fun, the other keeps you up at night.

Toronto has other second-base options anyway. Brandon Lowe is on the market, Addison Barger could get a look and Ernie Clement remains under contract.

The question is whether a player who just heard boos in the Bronx wants to bet on himself for one year. If he insists on a long-term payday, the Yankees can decide whether they still want him.
