This is the elephant in the room that Ross Atkins can't ignore: Kevin Gausman is entering his final year, and letting him pitch as a "lame duck" is a dangerous game.

We are so focused on who the Blue Jays might add that we’ve forgotten about the anchor who might leave.
Kevin Gausman (Signed 5-year deal in 2021) is entering the final season of his $110 million contract.
He has been everything promised and more: a clubhouse leader, a Cy Young finalist, and the most consistent arm in the rotation since the day he arrived.
But here is the reality: Gausman turns 35 this season.
The front office faces a massive decision right now. Do you let him play out the year and risk losing him for nothing (or trading him if the season goes south), or do you lock him in to finish his career in the 6ix?
With Chris Bassitt currently sitting in free agency limbo and likely not returning, Gausman is the only veteran stability we have left.
The rotation is pivoting to youth. Trey Yesavage (Drafted 1st Round, 2024 by Toronto) is the future, and rookie Jake Bloss is knocking on the door.
But you can't field a rotation of entirely kids. You need the "Wizard" to show them the way.

Loyalty pays dividends in the clubhouse

Extending Gausman isn't just about his splitter; it's about culture.
He chose Toronto when others wouldn't. He loves the city.
A two-year extension—taking him through his age-37 season—would be the perfect bridge to the next era.
It tells the locker room that performance is rewarded and keeps a legitimate ace at the top of the rotation while Yesavage finds his footing.
If Atkins waits until November, the price might go up—or worse, Gausman might decide he wants to pitch closer to home.
Don't gamble with the ace. Pay the man.
