Daulton Varsho left the Blue Jays at the deadline, and his bat hasn't recovered since.
Toronto sent him to the Astros on Aug. 3, ending a tenure known for Gold Glove caliber defense but inconsistent offense.
He was actually getting ready to play against Houston that day. Instead, he wound up starting in center field for the home side, batting cleanup, and singling off his own teammate from a few hours earlier, Shane Bieber.
Through 24 games with the Astros, Varsho is hitting just .188.
"Since the trade, things haven't gone great," Mike Wilner wrote for the Toronto Sun. "Varsho has struggled mightily with the bat, though he's back to playing spectacular defence."
He's hitting just 10 home runs on the season, a power outage he's addressed directly.
"I'm not really disappointed in the year that I'm having, but it's definitely a learning curve of, 'I need to be a little better at this than I've been,'" Varsho told The Athletic's Chandler Rome.
Why free agency timing makes this stretch so critical
None of this is entirely new territory. Varsho is a career .228 hitter who hasn't posted an OBP above .300 since 2022.
His 24.1% strikeout rate sits above league average, which makes a tough offensive profile even harder when the power disappears.
That power used to cover for the rest. He hit 85 home runs over the three seasons before landing in Houston, enough to justify a spot in prominent lineups.
Toronto ultimately decided the offensive production hadn't matched expectations closely enough, trading him for right-hander Spencer Arrighetti.
Houston wanted his glove and his left-handed bat for its own playoff push, and the club has already shuffled him around the lineup, including time in the middle of the order.
Varsho is set for free agency after this season, and this stretch matters more than most given how it shapes his market.
He doesn't need to reinvent himself completely, but better contact quality could change how his free agency actually plays out this winter.
His defense remains a real asset regardless. If the power comes back even partially, Houston could still end up being the right place for him to rebuild his value.
Time is the real constraint here, especially if the Astros themselves can't hold onto their own playoff spot down the stretch.
