Ernie Clement says the Blue Jays have a secret behind their surge, and he won't say what it is.
Toronto has gone 13-9 in August, pulling within two games of the final AL wild-card spot with 30 games left.
That's a stunning turnaround for a team that looked lost after parting ways with several stars at the trade deadline.
Clement went on the Spittin' Chiclets podcast and hinted at something happening behind the scenes that's changed everything.
Host Paul Bissonnette asked if anything specific had rallied the team during the second half.
"There is, there is. It's dangerous. We are a dangerous team because of it," Clement said, laughing before catching himself.
"It's totally flipped us around, but we will see. I can't say it though."
Why the secret stays locked up unless October happens
The hosts pushed him to spill it. Clement wouldn't budge.
"We have to keep it in-house," Clement said. "If we win the World Series, I'll tell you."
This isn't the first odd twist in Toronto's season. Back in July, assistant hitting coach Cody Atkinson bought a stuffed red dragon for the dugout, an attempt to snap the offense out of its slump.
Clement also weighed in on the roster overhaul at the deadline, sounding genuinely upbeat about where things landed.
"We retooled at the deadline and brought in some younger guys that can help moving forward. I think we got better," he said.
"We are finally playing the way we did at the end of last year. It's coming at the right time."
Toronto went 15-10 last September on its way to its first AL East title in a decade. A similar stretch this year would put the Blue Jays right back in October.
"We just want to play meaningful baseball. We are right back in this thing and in control of our own destiny," Clement said.
Whatever the secret is, the Blue Jays clearly believe in it. Fans will just have to wait, hopefully until a champagne-soaked clubhouse, to find out what it actually is.
