Torey Lovullo, who once coached first base for the Blue Jays, could be out of a job soon.

It's not a fun stretch to be a Diamondbacks fan right now, with Arizona fighting for the final NL wild-card spot amid real internal drama.

Star second baseman Ketel Marte was a no-show during the team's series against the Red Sox on Aug. 17.

Arizona placed him on the IL with left knee inflammation and later publicly apologized to the team once he returned.

FanSided's Pat Ragazzo reported the Diamondbacks are now considering parting ways with Lovullo entirely.

"I spoke with rival executives and scouts about how they think the Marte situation will play out in Arizona this offseason," Ragazzo wrote.

"One rival NL scout suggested that the Diamondbacks could choose Marte over Lovullo, with the manager's contract expiring after the 2026 season."

Why Lovullo might be an unfair scapegoat here

The scout told Ragazzo that Arizona is likely to clean house after the season, following a failed attempt to trade Marte before he acquired his 10/5 rights.

That situation traces back to Marte being seen at a casino during his IL stint without communicating his absence to Lovullo.

Marte's 10/5 rights give him a full no-trade clause, making him difficult to move even if the front office wanted to.

Since 2023, Marte has had four unexpected absences, including a separate controversy during All-Star week in 2025.

Letting Lovullo go with an expiring contract would be a clean exit for Arizona, and he's led the club since 2017, including a trip to the 2023 World Series before losing to the Rangers.

Four incidents under one manager's watch is a real pattern worth examining. But that pattern points just as clearly toward upper management's inability to move Marte out of the organization.

Making Lovullo the scapegoat for failing to control a player's off-field behavior doesn't add up cleanly.

Lovullo spent two seasons with Toronto, in 2011 and 2012, as first-base coach, before following manager John Farrell to Boston, where he helped the Red Sox win a World Series in 2013.

Whether Arizona actually moves on from him at season's end, or the front office instead confronts its own role in the Marte situation, remains the real question hanging over this offseason.
