Former Blue Jays Matt Chapman signed in the off-season with the Giants and explained in a recent interview why he did not return to Toronto.
Chapman stated that it was a strange off-season as he did not receive many calls and although he had a few conversations with Ross Atkins, it seemed like they were more interested in signing Ohtani. By the time Atkins decided to start contract negotiations with Chapman, it was too late as he was already planning on signing with the Giants.
Matt Chapman says "the Blue Jays kind of came in there at the end" of his free agency but he was already too far down the road with the Giants at that point.
He adds that, "I really enjoyed both of my years with the Blue Jays. I appreciate them giving me the opportunity."

This is a bad look for Atkins as it seems he put in too much focus on trying to land Ohtani but ended up losing out on him and Chapman at the same time.
