MLB announce that former Blue Jay Arjun Nimmala has been named the Arizona Fall League Hitter of the Week. The former Blue Jays prospect keeps making Toronto's deadline trade look more complicated.
The Angels' top prospect posted a 1.758 OPS over the week, per MLB. He sits at No. 34 on MLB Pipeline's top 100.
It's the latest chapter in a red-hot fall. Through his first seven games with the Mesa Solar Sox, he was hitting .379 with a .514 on-base percentage.
There's a fun twist on that roster. He plays alongside Toronto's AFL prospects, including catcher Aaron Parker, his teammate at Double-A New Hampshire before the trade.
Toronto sent him to the Angels at the deadline with Eddie Micheletti Jr. and Angel Rivero for right-hander José Soriano.
"I just want to prove them right," Nimmala told MLB.com about the Angels earlier this month. Right now, he's doing exactly that.
José Soriano needs a big 2027 to balance the Arjun Nimmala trade
Toronto's return hasn't caught up yet. Soriano posted a 5.30 ERA over 10 starts after joining the Jays.
The Jays did have reason for confidence. JoJo Parker's breakout made them more comfortable parting with Nimmala, and Parker reached base at a .399 clip this season.
Is it time to panic? No, because AFL weeks don't settle trades, but they do shape how a deal gets talked about all winter.
The trade only works if Soriano fixes his pitch mix. If he doesn't, Toronto will have sent a top-40 prospect away for a rotation question mark.
It's like watching your old house get a gorgeous renovation from the new owners. You still got paid, but you can't help peeking in the windows.
Nimmala is just 20 and could start 2027 at Triple-A. His big-league debut may not be far off.
Soriano gets a full offseason with Pete Walker. That's Toronto's best chance to even out the ledger.
For now, the fall belongs to Nimmala. By next summer, Jays fans will know whether this trade is a story about a pitcher fixed or a prospect lost.
