Kevin Gausman's name is back in trade rumors, and this time he's not alone on the list.
The Toronto Blue Jays dropped their last two games before the break, falling to last place in the American League East and 12 games back of the division-leading Rays.
"They haven't declared themselves sellers," Caleb Kerney wrote, "however, several pitchers stand out as potential trade pieces. Jeff Hoffman, Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, and Patrick Corbin could all be moved for the right price."
Gausman's own numbers explain why his name keeps surfacing. He's 4-8 with a 4.41 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP across his starts this season.
That's not the production Toronto expected when it built this rotation around him, but a veteran with his track record still holds value for a contender in need of innings.
Bieber presents a much rougher case. He's carrying a 7.64 ERA and a 2.04 WHIP over just 17.2 innings, numbers that make him a tough sell to any team right now.
Corbin sits at 5.07 ERA with a 1.48 WHIP across 76.1 innings, and Hoffman rounds out the group at 4.57 ERA with 15 stolen bases allowed being his own separate issue this season.
Why 12 games back changes the calculation
A gap that large this late in July usually settles the buyer-or-seller debate on its own, whatever the front office says publicly.
None of these four pitchers are having the kind of dominant season that commands a huge return, which actually makes them easier to move if Toronto decides to go that direction.
It's a bit like clearing out furniture nobody's using anymore instead of holding onto it just in case.
Does a 12-game deficit make selling the obvious call, or does Toronto's proximity to a wild card spot keep this front office holding onto hope regardless of the standings gap?
Whatever direction ownership leans, all four names now carry real uncertainty heading into the stretch before the August 3 deadline.
Toronto's front office has a lot of decisions to make in a short window, and Gausman's future in Toronto may be the first domino to fall.
Should the Blue Jays trade Kevin Gausman before the deadline given their current standing?
