The Rockies could be a landing spot for George Springer this winter. A one-year deal near Spotrac's $10.3 million projection would fit their budget and their needs.

Colorado needs a reason for optimism. The Rockies are trying to avoid a fifth straight 100-loss season in 2027.

Their right-handed hitters were part of the problem. Rockies righties slashed .234/.304/.391 in 2026 with 76 home runs.

Springer would give Warren Schaeffer's lineup an experienced bat and a veteran voice. He wouldn't transform the franchise, but he'd bring a recognizable name on a short commitment.

Coors Field could also give his power a lift. He hit 15 homers for the Blue Jays in 2026, second on a team that hit the fewest in baseball.

But does Colorado make sense for him? That's the bigger question.

George Springer's leadership might be better spent on a contender

He's coming off a down year. He regressed in 2026, took a turn on the IL and is among the veterans weighing retirement.

If he keeps playing, he'll want a role where his experience matters. He embraced a leadership role on a young, ascending Toronto team that reached the 2025 World Series.

Colorado makes sense for Colorado. It makes a lot less sense for Springer, who would be better served chasing one more October with a club like the White Sox or Pirates.

Signing with a rebuilding team at this stage is like a veteran actor joining a show that's likely to be cancelled. The paycheque is real, but nobody sticks around for the finale.

He'd also likely be a DH in Denver. He and Bo Bichette posted the worst Fielding Run Value marks among Blue Jays with 1,000-plus innings from 2024 through 2026.

Durability still has value. He logged 411 games over the last three seasons, third-most on the Jays.

The Blue Jays aren't expected to bid. Toronto's DH and outfield plans point toward bigger bats like Seiya Suzuki and Randy Arozarena.

If the Rockies call, Springer gets a choice between easy at-bats and meaningful ones. At this stage of his career, that decision will say a lot about how much he has left in the tank.
