The Toronto Blue Jays lineup still has a few question marks heading into the 2025 season and it looks like the Blue Jays have some interesting plans for outfielder Nathan Lukes.
The Blue Jays have an interesting plan in place for Nathan Lukes next season
Lukes got called up for the first time in 2023 as he played 29 games for the Blue Jays and last year saw 22 games in the MLB as a 30 year old which most thought that meant he would never truly crack the lineup.
Reports suggests that if Daulton Varsho ends up missing a lot of time next season,
Lukes could end up taking on that role at centerfield and would likely spend the entire 2025 season in the MLB if he plays well.
Lukes will have a chance to earn a look in centre field if Daulton Varsho is out for a significant period. Last season, Lukes had -2 Defensive Runs Saved and -2 Outs Above Average in 26 innings in centre, albeit with better defensive metrics in right field. -Delaney
The 31 year old got called up late last season after the Blue Jays were big sellers at the trade deadline and ended playing 22 games in which he hit 1 homerun, 10 RBIs and had a .303 batting average in 76 at bats.
With the Blue Jays being sellers at the 2024 trade deadline, Lukes got an opportunity late in the season, receiving the call-up on Aug. 30. In 91 plate appearances with the Jays, Lukes slashed .303/.371/.447 with his first home run for a 132 wRC+. -Delnaey
While most never expected Lukes to be a part of the Blue Jays future given his age and lack of experience in the majors, it looks like 2025 might finally be the year he gets a real shot.
Fans are hoping for a better option in the outfield than Lukes but he might actually end up surprising a lot of people this season.
