The Blue Jays signed Toronto Native Joey Votto in the off-season to a minor league contract. Many fans have complained about the signing but it is clearly a smart move. It has brought joy to many as they see a hometown hero return to his childhood team and Votto feels young again trying to compete for a spot as a minor league player.
Votto Signing Benefiting both the Team and the Player
The Blue Jays signed former all-star Joey Votto to a minor league contract in the off-season which many brushed off but it clearly a great move for the Jays.
For the fans, it is great to see Votto in a Blue Jays uniform as he is from Toronto and grew as a fan of the team. Additionally, with his high pedigree, there is always a chance that Votto ends up impressing the organization and still has some greatness left in him.
On the other hand, Votto has expressed that he is glad to be part of his hometown organization but he also loves the fact that he is competing for a spot with the rest of the minor leaguers. He stated that he enjoys the competition and being around all these young players trying to make it to the big leagues.
«It excites me to be in a hotel room in Florida, and to take a shuttle or an Uber to the ballpark and to be a minor-league player with an unknown number, just trying my very best to make a team. And it invigorates me. This is what I feel like I've been about, and it brings me great joy.»
It is not likely that we get to see the same level of skill from Votto as when he won MVP but there is always a chance he still has some gas left in the tank and turns out to be more than we expected.
