Michael G. DeFrancisco from Athlon Sports writes that the Toronto Blue Jays have struggled out of the gate offensively, ranking 23rd in OPS with a .662 mark and sitting second-to-last in home runs with just 14. While it's been tough to find many offensive categories where they aren't below average, Friday's win over the New York Yankees was a much-needed bright spot.
"After signing superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a $500 million contract, the expectations for this offense were sky high. The right-handed slugger was among those in an early-season funk, particularly in the power department, but it was his solo shot that opened the scoring on Friday." -DeFrancisco
Speaking to reporters after the game, Blue Jays manager John Schneider shared a strong message regarding his superstar first baseman.
"It's no secret As Vlad goes, we go, and hopefully he has a good stay here in New York." -Schneider
DeFrancisco also writes that part of the reason for Toronto's early-season struggles is that their best hitters haven't found their rhythm yet. Guerrero Jr. entered Friday with a modest .745 OPS and only one home run, while fellow star Bo Bichette also had a slow start, posting just a .694 OPS.
The Blue Jays currently sit at 13-15 and in fourth place in the American League East division. They return home to host a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.
