Yariel Rodriguez has signed with the Indios de Mayagüez of the Puerto Rico Winter League. The Blue Jays right-hander is chasing a reset after a lost 2026.
The Cuban righty dealt with physical issues this season, including a back injury. The winter assignment is about getting his pitching rhythm back.
The plan, per sources, is to use those outings to prepare for 2027 with the Blue Jays. That alone says the organization isn't ready to close the book.
His 2026 was rough. He was designated for assignment in June and finished at -0.2 fWAR.
He wasn't alone in that. Simeon Woods Richardson and Michael Lorenzen were also designated for assignment as Toronto churned through bullpen options.
The gap behind the back end was glaring. The bullpen combined for 4.8 fWAR, but everybody outside Louis Varland managed just 1.7.
Toronto's middle relief needs Yariel Rodriguez healthy
That's where a healthy version of him could matter. Toronto needs arms that can bridge the middle innings to Tyler Rogers and Varland.
Can winter ball fix a back issue? Not by itself, but regular innings against real hitters will show quickly whether his body is cooperating.
Winter ball is the body shop after a fender bender. You find out fast whether the frame is bent or it just needed a little paint.
The workload math makes it worth trying. Mason Fluharty carried one of the heaviest relief loads in baseball, and the Jays can't lean on him that hard again.
This is the right move for both sides. It costs Toronto nothing, and it gives Rodriguez a stage to prove he deserves another look in spring.
The pressure is real, though. The Jays are expected to add bullpen help this winter, and every new arm narrows his path.
If he looks sharp in Mayagüez, he walks into camp with momentum. If the back acts up again, his time in Toronto may run out before spring training does.
