Toronto Blue Jays pursuit of Cody Bellinger could jump the New York Yankees and reshape the AL East race.

A recent piece making the rounds says Toronto has a real lane here, because the Yankees and Bellinger still aren't aligned on terms.

The whole hook is simple, if the Blue Jays are willing to beat the offer, the door is open.

The reason it feels plausible is that we actually know where the snag is. MLB.com's rumor tracker says the Yankees have been in the five-year range, up to about $160 million with opt-outs, while Bellinger is said to be seeking a seven-year deal.

And Bellinger earned the leverage. In 2025 with New York, he hit .272 with 29 homers, 98 RBIs, and an .814 OPS across 588 at-bats, plus 13 steals, basically a clean “win-now” season.

The Blue Jays have not been seen as the favorites to land Bellinger but have been in the mix as there has been multiple reports that they are very interested in the outfielder.

Cody Bellinger could flip Yankees to Blue Jays

As a fan, I'd enjoy the chaos of Toronto prying a star away from New York, because that's the kind of move contenders make.

The on-field fit is obvious in one breath, lefty power, real defense, and the ability to bounce between the outfield spots and first base.

MLB.com's own breakdown of his market leans on the same idea, he's a good player, just tough to price long-term.

This move could make a ton of sense for the Blue Jays after losing out on both Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette last week. MLB.com has already framed the Blue Jays as a team that could pivot hard to Bellinger now that the market has shifted.

My take is the Blue Jays should be interested, but only if they're doing it for impact, not for headlines.

If the “bold twist” is simply giving the seventh year the Yankees won't, that's a serious bet on a player whose value is tied to athleticism.

Still, a lineup with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. anchored in the middle plays better when there's another dangerous lefty who can punish fastballs and shorten games.
