Alejandro Kirk gave John Schneider a welcome Blue Jays update Tuesday, landing a new off-field role while he keeps working back from thumb surgery.
That news came before Toronto's game against Tampa Bay, with Kirk announced as a global ambassador for Banditos Mexican Lager.
It is not a baseball transaction, but it still says something about where Kirk stands. Even while he is on the injured list, his profile is still growing beyond the Blue Jays clubhouse.
The timing makes it stand out even more. Toronto has been without Kirk since early April after he suffered a fractured left thumb and underwent surgery.
That absence has left a real hole behind the plate. Tyler Heineman and Brandon Valenzuela have handled the catching work, but neither gives the Blue Jays the same full-game value Kirk brings.
Kirk is not just another regular on this roster. He is a 2-time All-Star, a Silver Slugger winner, and one of the steadiest catchers Toronto has had in recent years.
Last season showed exactly why the Blue Jays still miss him. In 2025, Kirk hit .282 with a .348 on-base percentage, a .421 slugging percentage, 15 home runs, and 76 RBIs.
Kirk's new partnership fits his Blue Jays identity
The Banditos partnership is an easy fit on the surface. The brand is a Canadian-made Mexican lager, and Kirk's own story runs through both places.
Kirk is from Tijuana, Mexico, and he represented Mexico at the 2026 World Baseball Classic before the MLB season started. Toronto, of course, remains his baseball home.
That is why this announcement feels cleaner than a random endorsement drop. It lines up with who Kirk is, where he comes from, and how visible he has become as one of the Blue Jays' most recognizable players.
There is also a little reminder here of how much weight Kirk carries for the club. Even while rehabbing, he is still one of the few Toronto players whose name cuts through on and off the field.
The Blue Jays would still trade this kind of career news for a healthy thumb and a return date. That part has not changed.
Toronto badly needs his bat, his game-calling, and the calm presence he brings behind the plate. The longer he stays out, the more obvious that gets.
Still, Tuesday's news gave Kirk a different kind of spotlight. He is still sidelined, but he is not fading into the background.
And for a player the Blue Jays still need in a big way, that matters too.
Will Alejandro Kirk make a bigger impact for the Blue Jays after he returns than any other injured player on the roster?
