Davis Schneider is making John Schneider’s next roster call look obvious once Addison Barger is ready to come off the injured list.

That is where this is headed now. Barger is expected back on May 6 or May 8 after starting a rehab assignment with Single-A Dunedin, and Toronto will need to clear a spot.

The clearest name is Schneider. He has hit .137 with a .578 OPS in 51 at-bats this season, and there is not enough production there to justify protecting his roster spot over healthier, more versatile options.

This is not just about a slow month. Schneider’s role has already been squeezed by the way the Blue Jays are built, with George Springer at DH, Daulton Varsho in the outfield mix, and Barger expected to see time in right field when active.

Toronto also still carries Myles Straw, Jesús Sánchez and Yohendrick Piñango in the outfield group, which leaves very little room for a reserve bat that is not producing.

The recent form only makes the decision easier. Over his last 15 games, Schneider has gone 1-for-27, and that kind of slide is tough to carry when the club is already trying to patch together offense around a crowded bench.

Barger’s return puts Toronto’s depth chart in focus

Barger is not coming back as a spare part. Toronto’s own roster outlook entering the season had him lined up for regular right-field work, with Kazuma Okamoto holding down third base.

That matters because Barger does more than fill a bench seat. He gives the Blue Jays another left-handed bat and a player they clearly wanted in a meaningful role before the left ankle sprain sent him to the injured list on April 7.

Schneider, by contrast, looks like the player with the weakest case. He has appeared mostly in left field this season, and Toronto already has cleaner defensive fits and more trusted everyday names around him.

This is where the option angle matters. Sending Schneider to Triple-A Buffalo would let the Blue Jays keep organizational depth without cutting ties, and it would give him a chance to get regular at-bats instead of scattered bench work. That is a much better outcome than letting him keep grinding through this in a limited role.

It would also be the least disruptive move. Toronto would not need to touch its core lineup, and John Schneider could plug Barger right back into the active roster without forcing a harder roster shuffle elsewhere.

None of this means Schneider is finished. It just means the roster math is getting louder, and his bat has not done enough to quiet it.

Once Barger is cleared, the Blue Jays will have to choose between upside and stagnation. Right now, Davis Schneider looks like the easy answer to Buffalo.
