Ernie Clement is back in John Schneider's lineup Wednesday, giving the Blue Jays a needed infield reset against the Yankees.
That is the story here, more than any single batting-order tweak. Clement sat out Tuesday because of strep throat, but Toronto has him right back in the card for the series finale in the Bronx.
The Blue Jays are 21-27 coming into the game, and they are trying to stop a slide against a Yankees club that entered Wednesday at 30-19. In that spot, getting a regular back matters.
Toronto's lineup is set with George Springer leading off as the designated hitter, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first base, and Daulton Varsho in center field. Kazuma Okamoto hits cleanup at third, followed by Yohendrick Piñango in left.
Clement slots in sixth and plays second base. Behind him are Jesús Sánchez in right field, Brandon Valenzuela behind the plate, and Andrés Giménez at shortstop.
That placement says plenty. Schneider did not bury Clement on the bench for another day or use him only as a late option. He put him right back into the middle-lower part of the order and back on the dirt.

Why Ernie Clement's return matters today
Clement had started the previous 15 games before missing Tuesday's lineup. That kind of usage tells you how often Schneider wants his glove and contact profile in play.
His return also gives Toronto a cleaner defensive look. Moving Clement back into the infield lets the Blue Jays keep their alignment stable in a game where run prevention could decide everything.
The timing is not small, either. MLB lists Trey Yesavage against Cam Schlittler in Wednesday's matchup, and both young right-handers came in with ERAs under 2.00. That raises the value of every ball in play.
For Toronto, that means Clement's job is not only about getting on base. It is about helping Schneider tighten the infield behind a starter who may not have much margin against this Yankees lineup.
There is also a tone element to this. Tuesday's absence came with a clear explanation, and Wednesday's return tells you the illness did not drag into something bigger.
That gives the Blue Jays a more normal lineup card after a short disruption. On a club chasing traction, even a one-day return can matter when the opponent is New York and the game is sitting on the edge.
So this is not just Ernie Clement being available again. It is John Schneider getting one of his regular infield pieces back at a moment when Toronto needs fewer moving parts, not more.
