Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is showing real signs of progress in his concussion recovery which is great news for the Blue Jays.
He went through a light on-field workout at Tropicana Field this afternoon, running activation drills and jogging.
That's not something you let a concussed player do if his symptoms haven't calmed down.
Guerrero landed on the seven-day IL after colliding hard with George Lombard Jr. against the Yankees.
It's the first IL stint of his career, and he'd been expected to be out until at least Aug. 22.
Light workouts like this one usually come a step before baseball activities ramp up further.
There's no swing work reported yet, and no timeline attached to when he actually gets back in the box.
Why the Blue Jays need him back sooner than later
Toronto is in the middle of a six-game stretch that could shape its entire wild-card push, starting with this series in Tampa.
The Blue Jays have gone without their biggest bat for a stretch that includes the AL's best team and a trip to Yankee Stadium.
Guerrero has just seven home runs this season, well below what's expected from a player of his caliber and contract.
Whether jogging around Tropicana Field translates to a return this week or next is still unclear.
But for a team that's struggled to score runs consistently all year, any sign of him getting closer counts as good news right now.
The next step is usually baseball activities, live batting practice, and then a call on activation. None of that has a date attached yet.
Do you think Vladimir Guerrero Jr. returns from the concussion IL this week?
