Louis Varland has given Toronto a lockdown arm, and the Blue Jays’ 2025 deadline deal with Minnesota looks better by the week.

Nine months later, this is no longer just a trade the Blue Jays can defend. It is one they are clearly winning right now.

The full swap still stands out for its size. Toronto landed Varland and Ty France from the Twins, while Minnesota got Alan Roden and Kendry Rojas back.

Varland is the name driving the conversation now. He has taken over the closer role and turned a late-inning problem into one of Toronto’s cleanest strengths.

That is a massive shift from where this looked late last summer. Varland posted a 4.94 ERA over 23 regular-season games with Toronto after the trade, and there were real stretches where his fit looked shaky.

Schneider stuck with him anyway. That patience matters now, because the Blue Jays are cashing in on the version of Varland they believed was still in there.

This season has changed the tone completely. Varland has allowed 1 earned run over 17 innings, struck out 28, and converted all 4 of his save chances since taking over the ninth inning.

Toronto is getting the payoff now

That is what makes this feel like a steal instead of a solid baseball trade. Toronto did not just add bullpen depth. It may have landed an in-his-prime late-game weapon under team control through 2030.

The timing matters, too. Varland was just named the American League Reliever of the Month for April, which only sharpens the contrast between his current value and the price Toronto paid.

France adds to the case. He hit .277/.320/.372 in 37 games for Toronto after the deal and gave the club useful defensive coverage, which made the trade deeper than a one-arm gamble.

Minnesota may still get value from its side. Roden has shown life at Triple-A St. Paul with a .425 OBP and .889 OPS, and Rojas has pitched well enough to stay on the radar.

But that is the point. The Twins’ return still sits in projection mode, while Toronto is already using the best asset in big spots at the highest level.

That gap is what decides these deals. Not who looked better on paper at the deadline, but who is helping win games now.

And right now, the answer is clear. Varland has turned Toronto’s deadline swing into a move that feels bigger than a bullpen patch, and much closer to a front-office win the Blue Jays can bank on.
