Ross Atkins was very busy this offseason with the Toronto Blue Jays, especially in the pitcher department, signing Cody Ponce and most notably Dylan Cease, and for Cease, he is ready to earn every bit of his $210M contract with the Blue Jays.
Cease has also already gone to Kevin Gausman for advice before entering this season.
Dylan Cease ready to be a star for the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Sportsnet staff reported on Cease's mentality going into the season, and what ultimately led him to signing with the Blue Jays. The money is always nice, but Cease made sure it wasn't the main priority.
So while the money is nice, Cease views it as a form of motivation. That he won't rest on his laurels, coasting into the sunset on the back of generational wealth, but that he'll instead prove to himself and fans that he earned that money. That approach is what led Cease to the Jays in the first place, with the 29-year-old viewing the team as one that could further elevate his game.-Sportsnet
Cease is mostly known as a pitcher who relies solely on two pitches, his four-seam and his slider, where he throws both at around 40% of the time each. But he has already spoken to Gausman to help develop a third pitch, and Cease is very interested in Gausman's splitter. It would be a big upgrade for Cease, as it's hard to rely on two pitches if the aim is to be an ace pitcher.
"Though he didn't get into specifics, Cease mentioned an hour-and-a-half-long conversation with current Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman before signing, when they talked about Gausman's splitter, among other things. And while Cease said he wasn't necessarily honing in on Gausman's signature pitch, he mentioned he was impressed by the Jays' overall focus on the details - doing the little things to improve incrementally and win games."-Sportsnet
Cease also mentioned that he wanted to play for a winning organization, winning defines one's legacy, and Cease can see what the Blue Jays are building here. Cease wants to be one of the greats just like most competitive athletes do, and it can only be accomplished with championships. Hopefully he can help bring one to Toronto.
