Daulton Varsho is back, and John Schneider's lineup gives the Blue Jays a very different look against the Cubs today.
George Springer stays at DH and leads off, which keeps his bat in a tone-setting spot without asking him to cover the outfield.
Nathan Lukes hits second in right field, and that is a real trust spot. Schneider is betting on contact and on-base work ahead of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Guerrero slides into the 3-hole again, right where Toronto needs him. When he is there, the lineup still runs through his at-bats and whatever damage he can create.
The bigger surprise is Brandon Valenzuela batting cleanup behind him. That is a loud vote of confidence from Schneider, and it shows the Blue Jays are not treating the young catcher like a temporary fill-in anymore.
Kazuma Okamoto follows at third base, which gives Toronto another power lane in the middle. That 4-5 stretch is the heart of the card today.
Then comes the return that changes the shape of everything else. Varsho is back in center field and hitting sixth, which adds speed, defense, and another left-handed bat Toronto has badly missed.
Toronto's lineup is built on flexibility today
Davis Schneider gets second base and the seventh spot, which is interesting for 2 reasons. It keeps his bat involved, and it shows the Blue Jays still are looking for ways to squeeze offense from him.
Andrés Giménez bats eighth at shortstop, which is lower than where his name value might suggest, but it gives Toronto another strong defender in the bottom third. That can still matter in a tight game.
Myles Straw rounds it out in left field. That makes the outfield faster than usual, and it gives the Blue Jays a lineup that looks more athletic than purely slug-heavy.
What stands out most is the balance. Springer and Lukes set the table, Guerrero and Valenzuela are asked to cash innings, Okamoto still carries threat behind them, and Varsho gives the whole card more life.
Valenzuela in cleanup is the move fans will talk about first. Schneider is either rewarding the rookie's recent work or sending a clear message that the Blue Jays need fresh bats to take on bigger roles.
Varsho's return might be just as important. He lengthens the lineup, cleans up the field, and makes the Blue Jays look a lot closer to a real everyday group again.
So this is not just another lineup card. It is Schneider leaning into youth, speed, and a little boldness as the Blue Jays try to push through against the Cubs today.
