Ernie Clement and John Schneider may soon face a tougher lineup question than anyone expected in June.

That question showed up after Athlon highlighted ESPN's report that Luis Arraez could fit the Blue Jays at the deadline. Jeff Passan reportedly named Toronto among the best fits and said he believes Arraez has a 90% chance of being traded.

On the surface, the idea makes sense. Arraez is hitting .319 with a .352 on-base percentage and a .787 OPS over 69 games, which is exactly the kind of contact-heavy bat Toronto has been chasing.

But the move gets complicated the second you look at Clement. He is not some utility filler anymore. He has played too well to be treated like the easy guy who simply slides aside.

Clement is batting .299 with a .770 OPS, 7 home runs, and 28 RBIs through 72 games. He also leads the American League with 20 doubles, which is why his All-Star push has started to feel real instead of cute.

That is the problem Toronto would have to solve. Arraez is a second baseman by trade. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has first base locked down. And the Blue Jays cannot afford to take Clement's bat out of the lineup every day just to make a trade fit.

Athlon's read was simple: Clement would likely have to move around. Shortstop and third base become the obvious answers, with Kazuma Okamoto or Arraez rotating through designated hitter on some days.

Toronto would be creating a good problem

That is why this is not a reason to reject Arraez. It is a reason to understand the cost inside the lineup card. Toronto would not just be adding a batting champion. It would be reshaping one of its best infield stories of the season.

The Blue Jays entered Wednesday at 35-38, so the front office has every reason to look for a spark. Athlon noted the club is still focused on winning, not drifting into a passive deadline.

Arraez could help that right away because he almost never gives away an at-bat. But Clement already gives Toronto some of that same feel, while also grading as an above-average defender at second base.

That is what makes this a real decision instead of simple fantasy trade chatter. If Toronto adds Arraez, Schneider has to find a way to keep Clement moving without dulling what has made him so valuable.

It is a puzzle worth discussing because Arraez is good enough to force the conversation. But the Blue Jays also have to admit something now: Ernie Clement has played too well to be treated like movable lineup furniture.

Should the Blue Jays trade for Luis Arraez if it means moving Ernie Clement around the infield?
