Otto Lopez led the majors in hits this season, and the Blue Jays once let him go. Now the Marlins might be willing to trade him back.
The Miami Herald reported that the Marlins aren't actively shopping Lopez or Xavier Edwards. But Clayton McCullough's club could be open to moving one or both this winter.
His 2026 was a breakout. He hit .305 with 191 hits, the most in baseball.
He also stole 34 bases and drove in 71 runs. The 28-year-old represented Canada at the World Baseball Classic this spring.
His Toronto story was short. He debuted with the Jays in 2022 and went 6-for-9 in eight games, but never got a regular chance.
Toronto designated him for assignment and traded him in 2024. He went 1-for-6 in Triple-A with the Giants before being let go again, and Miami scooped him up.
Xavier Edwards and Otto Lopez would add speed to Toronto's infield
Edwards is the other option. He hit .280 with a .360 on-base percentage in 2026 and has stolen at least 21 bases in each of the last three years.
He's a switch-hitter who played 138 games at second base last season. Like Lopez, he's under team control through 2029.
Why does this matter in Toronto? Because Ross Atkins hasn't committed to Ernie Clement at second base, and the Jays ranked 27th in stolen bases.
The knock on both is power. Toronto finished last in the majors in homers, and Edwards hit just six.
Lopez is the one worth chasing. He's right-handed, runs well and has more pop than Edwards, with 15 homers in 2025.
Paired with a power bat in the outfield, he'd give the lineup the kind of speed the Brewers just rode to the World Series.
Bringing him back would be like buying back the house you sold, now with a renovated kitchen. You already know the neighbourhood, and the upgrades are real.
The price is the question. Both players come with years of control, so Miami won't give either away.
Toronto missed on Lopez once. If the Marlins are listening, Atkins shouldn't let the majors' hit leader slip past him twice.
