Chase Lee gave John Schneider one needed inning, then the Blue Jays sent him right back to Triple-A a day later.
That is the kind of move that tells you exactly how tight Toronto's roster math has become. Lee was recalled on April 27 after Max Scherzer went on the 15-day injured list, then optioned back to Buffalo on April 28.
The timing matters because Lee was not just a paper arm. He actually got into the game that same day against Boston and covered 1.1 innings out of the bullpen.
He was charged with 1 earned run and struck out 1, which is a modest line but still useful work for a reliever dropped into a sudden call-up.
Then the Blue Jays pivoted. On the same April 28 transaction sheet, Toronto activated Trey Yesavage from the 15-day injured list and sent José Berrios on a rehab assignment to Buffalo.
That is where the story turns from Lee to roster pressure. Once Yesavage came back into the mix, Lee became the cleanest arm to move even after only 1 day in the clubhouse.
Lee's short stay shows how little room Toronto has
Scherzer's injury opened the door in the first place. The Blue Jays placed him on the injured list retroactive to April 25 with right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation.
Toronto needed coverage, and Lee fit the moment because he was already stretched enough to give Schneider more than a batter or two if the game bent that way. His season line now sits at 1 appearance and a 6.75 ERA.
That does not make this a performance demotion. It reads more like a depth shuttle, the kind contenders use when the bullpen, rotation, and injury board all start pushing against each other at once.
Lee is used to this grind. His player log shows Toronto had already optioned him to Buffalo on March 25 before this quick recall brought him back for one brief turn.
For Schneider, this is the cost of carrying a staff in flux. The manager still has Scherzer down, Berrios working his way back, and fresh innings to sort through almost every day.
For Lee, the message is simple even if the timing stings. Stay ready, keep getting outs in Buffalo, and expect the next phone call to come fast, because the Blue Jays have already shown they trust him when the roster starts shifting.
