Lazaro Estrada is on the injured list days after John Schneider sent him back to Buffalo following a brief Blue Jays call-up.
That is the kind of roster turn that grabs attention fast. Estrada had barely gone back down before Toronto had to shift him onto the major league injured list instead of simply letting him settle in at Triple-A.
The reason makes the move hit harder. Estrada was placed on the 15-day injured list with an impingement in his throwing shoulder, and the move was made retroactive to April 5.
That April 5 date matters because it was also the day the Blue Jays optioned him to Buffalo. The shoulder issue was discovered while Estrada was still on the active roster, which is why this became a big league IL move instead of just a minor league transaction.
It turns a short shuttle appearance into a much more frustrating story. Estrada got one game with Toronto this season, then watched that chance get swallowed up by a shoulder problem before he could build any momentum.
And the tough part is that he had given the Blue Jays exactly what they needed. In his lone outing on April 4 against the White Sox, Estrada worked 4.0 scoreless innings and looked far sharper than he did in his first taste of the majors last year.
The clip of this move is not dramatic, but the consequence is. A depth arm finally gets a clean relief showing, gets optioned the next day, and then the shoulder issue catches up with him before the next stop can even start.

Toronto loses more than a depth arm here
Estrada is not a headline starter, but that does not make this small. He entered the year with only 4 days of MLB service time, so this IL placement also gives him a little more service while the club waits on his shoulder to calm down.
For Toronto, the bigger issue is pitching attrition. Estrada became the seventh pitcher and 11th player on the Blue Jays' big league injured list, which tells you how quickly this staff has been stretched in the opening weeks.
That leaves Schneider with one less arm who could cover real innings. Estrada's profile was never about frontline upside. It was about length, coverage, and giving the bullpen a chance to breathe when games got messy.
He also is not some outsider passing through. Estrada signed with Toronto in 2018 and has spent his entire pro career in the organization, grinding his way to Triple-A in 2025 before getting this latest shot.
That is what makes the timing sting. Estrada finally gave the Blue Jays a useful major league outing, then went right from optioned arm to injured arm without ever really getting a chance to turn one appearance into something bigger.
Now the Blue Jays are back to waiting. And for Lazaro Estrada, a short major league stint just became an even tougher story because the next step is no longer Buffalo innings. It is shoulder recovery.
