Kevin Gausman wore an Auston Matthews Maple Leafs jersey for Halloween, and Blue Jays fans noticed. The timing only fuelled the reunion talk.

His wife, Taylor, shared a photo on Instagram of the family trick-or-treating Saturday night. He went with the blue and white.

It's unclear where the photo was taken. The setting doesn't look like Toronto, and it may have been the family's offseason home in Louisiana.

Still, the message was hard to miss. You can take Gausman out of Toronto, but apparently not the Toronto out of Gausman.

The on-field reality is less charming. After the deadline trade to the Cubs, the 35-year-old posted a 4.83 ERA over 50.1 innings.

He also lost his lone postseason start as Chicago was swept by the Padres in the Wild Card Series.

Kevin Gausman's Toronto mansion sale tells a different story

Does a hockey jersey mean he wants back in? Not necessarily.

He recently listed his Toronto home for $6.8 million. That's not exactly the move of someone planning a long return.

The Jays' rotation does have openings. Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage and José Soriano are locks, with Cody Ponce, José Berrios and Spencer Arrighetti in the mix behind them.

A cute Halloween photo shouldn't drive a roster decision. His splitter faded badly in 2026, and Toronto has better options in Shane Bieber, Michael King or Trevor Rogers.

Wearing a Leafs jersey on Halloween is like an ex liking an old photo. Sweet, maybe even meaningful, but it doesn't mean you're getting back together.

Fans will always have a soft spot for him. His run through the 2025 postseason remains one of the best memories this franchise has.

He also hasn't decided whether he'll keep pitching. “I don't know,” he said when asked about retirement.

Free agency opens at 5 p.m. ET Monday. If his next jersey is a Blue Jays one again, it'll take more than nostalgia for Ross Atkins to make it happen.
