Arjun Nimmala just got named the Toronto Blue Jays' most likely trade chip, and the reasoning behind it says a lot about how deep this farm system actually is.

Toronto remains alive in a messy American League playoff picture, and that could push the front office toward buying at the deadline.

If that happens, shortstop is the one obvious spot of real surplus in this system.

JoJo Parker sits atop that group as the Blue Jays' No. 1 prospect, a potential superstar the organization won't move for anything short of a franchise-altering deal.

That's exactly why MLB.com singled out Nimmala instead in a Friday article on every team's biggest trade chip.

"The Blue Jays would only trade No. 1 prospect JoJo Parker in a franchise-changing deal, and Nimmala represents that next level of value," the article read, "now ranked the No. 45 prospect in baseball while enjoying a strong season in Double-A."

Nimmala, Toronto's first-round pick at No. 20 overall in 2023, is hitting .303 through his first 22 games at Double-A.

Why Toronto has real options beyond Nimmala too

The same article suggested lefty Johnny King, ranked fourth in Toronto's system, is a name the Blue Jays would be hesitant to deal.

Right-hander Gage Stanifer, ranked sixth, was floated as a more attractive trade option among the pitching prospects.

None of this means Toronto has to move Nimmala. Shortstops are among the easiest players to shift to another position down the road, and if both he and Parker develop into stars, that's a good problem for any organization.

It's a bit like having two great job candidates for one position, knowing full well one of them could thrive somewhere else on the roster instead.

But if Toronto wants a real upgrade before the deadline, Nimmala's name makes the most sense to attach to that kind of deal.

Does trading a top-50 prospect like Nimmala make sense for a team currently sitting outside a playoff spot, or does his ceiling make him too risky to give up regardless of the return?
