A recent report broke the news that the Toronto Blue Jays have every intention of keeping Bo Bichette, a contract extension should be presented before the star hits the free agent market next offseason which President Mark Shapiro touched on as well.
The shortstop has had a resurgent year and could potentially lead the AL in hits for the third time in his career.
Major news regarding Blue Jays Bo Bichette's contract
"Even though the Blue Jays seem unlikely to keep Bichette from reaching free agency with an extension, team president Mark Shapiro spoke out about negotiating a new contract with the shortstop, vowing to engage in talks in the near future" -Chawaga
"I'm confident that, at the right time, we'll make an effort to (keep Bichette)," -Shapiro
Bichette coming off a very uncharacteristically disappointing year, has done quite the opposite this season. With an impressive .297/.337/.468 and 16 homers the 27 year old star is expected to at least expect a $150 million dollar extension over a seven year period.
"On the active roster, the Jays have at least five pending free agents. None is more important than Bo Bichette, who's on pace to lead the AL in hits for a third time," Mitch Bannon wrote for The Athletic. "The Jays rarely sign extensions in the middle of seasons, though Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s $500 million contract earlier this year was a notable exception."-Chawaga
Whether they sign the extension now or after the season is done remains to be seen. However, it is clear that after this seasons production letting him explore other options would be a crucial mistake for Shapiro and the Blue Jays head office.
