Myles Straw got John Schneider's leadoff call Saturday as the Blue Jays opened the afternoon still without George Springer.

That was the first thing hanging over Toronto's lineup card against Cleveland. Springer remained out, so Schneider had to build the top of the order without one of his usual table-setters.
Straw landed in right field and at the top spot, a choice that told you what Toronto wanted. This was about speed, contact and trying to pressure Joey Cantillo early.
Behind Straw, Ernie Clement stayed in the 2-hole at second base, with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. locked into the 3-spot at first. That part of the card was the most stable piece of the whole setup.
Kazuma Okamoto batted cleanup at third, while Eloy Jiménez hit fifth as the designated hitter. Schneider clearly wanted his best available run-producing bats stacked tightly behind Guerrero.
Daulton Varsho stayed sixth in center field, then came Davis Schneider in left, Andrés Giménez at shortstop, and Tyler Heineman behind the plate. That gave Toronto a lineup built more on balance than star depth.

Toronto's lineup card showed the cost of waiting on Springer

Springer's absence matters because it keeps forcing role adjustments. Instead of letting Straw work lower in the order or off the bench, Schneider has to ask him to help set the tone from the first pitch.
It also changes the shape of the middle. Guerrero is still the anchor, but without Springer available, the Blue Jays need more from Okamoto, Jiménez and Varsho to keep the lineup from thinning out too fast.
The matchup made that even more important. Cleveland sent Cantillo in with a 3.20 ERA and 30 strikeouts, while Toronto countered with Kevin Gausman and his 2.54 ERA. This had the look of a tighter, lower-scoring afternoon game.
That is why Schneider's choices felt practical instead of flashy. He went with Straw's range in the field, Clement's bat-to-ball skills near the top, and Heineman catching a veteran starter in Gausman.
Toronto also needed a response after Friday's 8-6 loss dropped the club to 10-15. With Cleveland sitting at 15-12, this was already a bigger April game than the Blue Jays wanted on the schedule.
So the headline was not a surprise promotion or a major batting-order shakeup. It was Schneider piecing together a workable lineup, trusting Straw to start it, and waiting at least one more day for George Springer to get back into the picture.
