The Blue Jays top trade deadline target Pete Fairbanks has suffered a major setback that could alter him going anywhere this season.

That is the real hit in this update for Toronto. Fairbanks was placed on the 15-day injured list with nerve irritation after exiting Sunday’s game in Los Angeles with diminished sensation in his pitching hand.
On paper, Fairbanks made plenty of sense for the Blue Jays. Jays Journal tied him back to Toronto’s past bullpen interest, and a healthy late-inning arm still looks like something this club could use once the trade market sharpens.
The trouble is that this is not just a one-off sore arm story. MLB.com reported that Fairbanks dealt with a similar nerve-related issue in April 2024, which makes this latest setback harder to shrug off.
That matters because deadline value changes fast with relievers. A hard-throwing closer can look like a clean answer one week and a medical gamble the next. Fairbanks just slid toward the second category.
Toronto also has its own bullpen questions pushing this conversation. The Blue Jays pulled Jeff Hoffman out of the closer role last week and turned to a committee look, with Louis Varland grabbing 3 straight saves right after the change.

Toronto may need bullpen help, but Fairbanks now carries more risk

That is what makes the timing rough. The Blue Jays do not need to chase a reliever just to chase one, but they do need to keep scanning for late-game help if Hoffman’s reset drags deeper into the season.
Fairbanks would have been easy to understand in that role. He has the power arsenal, the ninth-inning background and the kind of edge contenders usually like to add in July. But injured relievers are tricky enough without a nerve issue attached to the file.
There is also a Miami angle working against Toronto here. The Marlins were 14-16 when the injury hit, and Jays Journal pointed out they were still hanging around the NL East picture instead of sinking into obvious seller territory.
So even if Fairbanks comes back on time, this may not be a simple shopping lane for Ross Atkins. Miami could hold, Fairbanks could miss more time, or both.
That leaves the Blue Jays with the same basic lesson they keep learning this year. Pitching depth looks fine until it doesn’t, and the deadline board can change with one injury update.
For now, Pete Fairbanks still looks like a logical name for Toronto to watch. He just no longer looks like a clean one.

Should the Blue Jays still explore Pete Fairbanks if he returns before the trade deadline ?
