Tyler Fitzgerald's Blue Jays run ended almost as quickly as it started, with Toronto flipping the infielder to the Dodgers not long after designating him for assignment.

That makes this less a baseball-performance story and more a roster-management story.
Fitzgerald never found a real lane in Toronto, and once the Blue Jays needed 40-man flexibility, his place became shaky in a hurry. Toronto's transaction log shows he was designated for assignment on April 24.
The speed of the turnaround is what stands out.
Fitzgerald had only just arrived in the organization earlier this month after Toronto acquired him from the Giants for cash considerations and optioned him to Triple-A Buffalo. MLB.com described that April 4 move as a depth play meant to bolster the infield.
That is what this Dodgers trade says most clearly.

Blue Jays trade Tyler Fitzgerald

The Blue Jays did not see Fitzgerald as a player they had to force onto the active roster. They saw him as movable depth, and once another team wanted him, Toronto chose the cleaner exit over trying to stash him deeper in the system.
It also fits the way the Blue Jays have been handling the back end of the roster all month.
The club has been shuffling relievers, rotating depth pieces, and protecting flexibility wherever it can while injuries and rehab returns keep changing the math.
Toronto's recent transactions include Trey Yesavage returning from the injured list, José Berrios heading out on a rehab assignment, and Chase Lee being optioned back to Buffalo.
That matters because Fitzgerald was always caught in that squeeze. He had already been optioned to Buffalo on April 14 after a brief recall, and by the time Willie MacIver was added, Fitzgerald was the one pushed off the 40-man.
The trade also closes the loop on what was supposed to be a low-risk upside bet.
Fitzgerald did have a useful recent big-league track record with San Francisco, including a .280 average, 15 home runs, and an .831 OPS in 2024, which is why Toronto took the shot in the first place.
But upside only matters if there is room to wait on it. Right now, the Blue Jays clearly did not feel they had that room.
So while the headline is that Tyler Fitzgerald is now a Dodger, the bigger Toronto takeaway is simpler.
The Blue Jays made a quick depth gamble, it did not stick, and they moved on before the roster crunch got any tighter.
