Toronto Blue Jays broadcaster Buck Martinez makes his long awaited return to the booth tonight as the Blue Jays take on the Los Angeles Dodgers and prior to the game he finally opened up about what he has been dealing with, lung cancer.

A little over a week ago, Martinez announced that after taking some additional time off he would be returning to the broadcast booth today to re-join Dan Shulman.

Martinez sat down with the Toronto Sun to share the story of his recent health issues in which he said he was diagnosed after the Blue Jays 2-0 win in Texas on May 28th in which the doctor told him cancer had spread to his lungs.
«After the Texas game, I had an appointment in Houston to see my doctor and I had some tests and the results came back that I had cancer in my lung,» -Martinez

«It was the same cancer I had, but it had gone to my lungs.» -Martinez

The Blue Jays broadcaster admitted that when he began chemo therapy he was not sure he would be able to return to the booth but that his wife was the one that kept him thinking positively.
«I didn't know if I was getting back,» Martinez admitted. «That was a big thing. When I first found out about it I was pretty grumpy. But my wife has been phenomenal. She never let me feel sorry for myself. She always pointed to the children we saw in (the hospital) in Houston and said you don't have it so bad. She's a rock.» -Martinez

Martinez added that he doesn't even know if the doctors really cleared him to return to the booth but he simply just told them that he is returning.
«I don't know if I really got the clearance,» he said. «I just told them I was going back." -Martinez

The decision to return for Martinez was simple since he stated baseball has been his entire life and he said he didn't realize how much he would miss it until this long absence from the booth.
«It's my life,» Martinez said when he asked what he was looking forward to the most. «It's been my life since I was 18 years old. And you don't realize what a big part of your life it is until it's taken away for a second time. I've been very fortunate.» -Martinez

This is incredibly sad news regarding Martinez that has been announced as he has another tough battle ahead of him but he clearly has the right attitude about it and will continue to fight as he has always done.
Until he is finally cleared and healthy, Blue Jays fans will certainly be keeping him in mind as he has brought them countless years of joy during his time in the booth.
