Andrew Velazquez gives Torey Lovullo another infield depth look as the Diamondbacks head into Sunday's finale with the Blue Jays trying to finish a sweep.

Arizona signed Velazquez to a minor league deal Saturday night, a quiet move on its own but one that still fits the club's bigger picture. The Diamondbacks have won 4 straight and entered Sunday at 13-8, while Toronto came in 7-13 and trying to stop the slide before it got any worse.
Velazquez is 31, and this is not a headline addition built to change Arizona's lineup today. MLB Trade Rumors framed him as a no-risk depth play, more emergency option than immediate answer.
Still, the timing stands out. Arizona made the add right before the series finale against a Blue Jays club that badly needs to avoid getting swept, and depth moves always feel a little louder when one club is rolling and the other is scrambling. That last point is an inference based on both teams' records and streaks.
Velazquez's recent track record explains the minor league label. He hit .242/.304/.345 in 368 plate appearances for the Yankees' top affiliate in 2025, and he has not appeared in the majors since 2023 with the Angels.
The speed is still part of the appeal. Since the start of 2024, he has stolen 58 bases in the minors, which gives Arizona at least one more utility piece with some movement if the organization needs a short-term fix.
The glove is where the case gets stronger. MLB Trade Rumors noted that Velazquez posted 11 Defensive Runs Saved and 3 Outs Above Average at shortstop in 2022, and Arizona's Triple-A announcement listed him as a utilityman rather than strictly an infielder.

Toronto's problem is bigger than Arizona's depth move

For the Blue Jays, this story is really about the other dugout. Toronto entered Sunday last in the AL East at 7-13 with a minus-32 run differential, so the pressure is on John Schneider's club to leave Phoenix with something.
That is why Arizona's little transaction lands differently in this spot. The Diamondbacks are adding depth from a position of comfort, not desperation. Geraldo Perdomo and Ketel Marte are still set up the middle, and Nolan Arenado still has room to keep working through his early issues at third.
Velazquez may never touch this series, and that is part of the point. Arizona could afford to make a background move because its roster is in a steadier place than Toronto's right now. That is an inference based on the Diamondbacks' record, streak, and the role MLB Trade Rumors assigned to Velazquez.
For the Blue Jays, Sunday is about avoiding the sweep. For the Diamondbacks, it is one more day with momentum, one more chance to keep piling up wins, and now one more depth piece waiting in the pipeline if they need him.
