Former Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Trevor Richards is officially a free agent again as he has been released by the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs have released former Blue Jays relief pitcher Trevor Richards

Richards started off the 2025 season in Triple-A with the Cubs minor leagu affiliate team in Iowa and after a disaster of a start to the season with a 77.27 ERA, the Cubs have decided to release him.
The Chicago Cubs released Richards from his minor-league contract over the weekend. Richards, 32, posted an ugly 7.27 ERA and walked seven in 8.2 innings at Triple-A Iowa. -Ellman

Last season, Richards put up decent numbers between the Twins and Blue Jays as he finished with a 4.55 ERA in 65.1 innings pitched which is why most thought he would have landed a major league deal this season.
Richards split last year between the Blue Jays and Minnesota Twins, recording a 4.55 ERA across 65.1 innings. He owns a 4.50 ERA and 1.9 bWAR since debuting for the Miami Marlins in 2018. -Elman

Since the Blue Jays are in a tough spot when it comes to injuries in their bullpen, it will be interesting to see if they decide to bring him back since he had some solid years for the Blue Jays.
The former Blue Jays reliever was one of the few have decent pitchers they had in their bullpen last year which is why bringing him back could definitely be a option for Toronto.
Even if Richards does not end up back in Toronto now that he is a free agent, he will surely be able to land a new deal with one of the other 30 teams in the league which will likely be a minor league deal.
