The baseball world lost a legend of the game today as former Toronto Blue Jays player Rico Carty tragically passed away at the age of 85.

Carty was a groundbreaking player in the MLB as one of the first Latino superstars in the MLB as he was one of the first players to come over from the Dominican Republic and became an all-star in 1970.
«Carty was one of the first groundbreaking Latino stars in the major leagues, and he established himself as a hero to millions in his native Dominican Republic, his hometown of San Pedro de Macoris, and the city of Atlanta, where he was a beloved fan favorite,» -MLBPA

Former Blue Jays player Rico Carty has tragically passed away at 85 years old

The Blue Jays announced earlier this afternoon that Carty passed away at a hospital in Atlanta earlier this morning surrounded by family and loved one.
Carty had been in the hospital for the past two weeks due to intestinal alignment issues which unfortunately took his life earlier today.
We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Blue Jay and 15-year MLB veteran Rico Carty.

A member of the Caribbean Baseball and Latino Baseball Halls of Fame and a humanitarian in the Dominican Republic - Carty's legacy and impact will be remembered forever.

Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time
The 15 year pro only played one season in Toronto in 1979 which ended up being his last year playing professional baseball.
Carty's best season came in 1970 where he was an All-Star game starter and won the NL batting average title with a league best .366 batting average to go along with 25 homeruns and 101 RBIs.
Carty had his best year in 1970, batting .366 with 25 homers and a career-best 101 RBIs. He started the All-Star Game after he was elected as a write-in candidate, joining Willie Mays and Hank Aaron in the NL outfield. -The Canadian Press
