Derek Law is heading to the desert on a minor league deal, giving the Diamondbacks a battle-tested arm who knows how to eat innings.
This is exactly the kind of under-the-radar move that Mike Hazen loves to make in late January.
The veteran right-hander missed the entire 2025 campaign recovering from flexor tendon surgery, but his track record suggests he has plenty left in the tank.
Derek Law (Drafted Round 9, 2011 by Giants) isn't flashy, but he is effective.
Before his injury woes, he was an absolute machine for the Washington Nationals in 2024.
He threw a staggering 90 innings out of the bullpen that year, posting a rock-solid 2.60 ERA over 75 appearances.
That kind of durability is rare in modern baseball.
If he can recapture even a fraction of that form, the D-Backs just landed a legitimate high-leverage option for pennies on the dollar.
The "Lawdog" offers low-risk, high-reward upside
We all know the bullpen has been a rollercoaster ride in Arizona for years.
Adding a guy who has survived the grind of eight big-league seasons brings a stabilizing presence to the relief corps.
There is zero risk here—if he’s healthy, he makes the team; if not, it costs the franchise nothing.
Law fits the mold of a "bridge" reliever perfectly, capable of getting four or five outs to save the closer for the ninth.
Fans should be cautiously optimistic about this one.
Coming off a lost season, Law will be hungry to prove he still belongs in The Show.
If his arm holds up, this signing could be the steal of the winter for Arizona.
