George Springer and the Toronto Blue Jays are staring at 2026 free agency, and fans can feel it.
An insider update Thursday night framed Springer as a player Toronto may not keep past this season, even after his 2025 rebound. The key point is simple, he is set to hit the market after 2026.
The same conversation got a boost from MLB.com reporter Keegan Matheson, who suggested Springer can keep playing if his workload shifts toward DH with occasional outfield starts. That is a real roadmap, not a farewell speech.
Springer turns 36 this season and he is entering the last year of his six-year deal.
Spotrac lists his 2026 base salary at $22.5 million, which makes any extension a serious decision.
George Springer future looms for Toronto Blue Jays
If you're a Jays fan, it's hard not to read this as the beginning of the end, even if you still love the player. Springer also made it tough to move on by raking in 2025.
MLB's stat line has him at a .309 average with 32 homers, 84 RBIs, 18 steals, and a .959 OPS in 2025. When a veteran hits like that, you do not casually replace it with a «plan.»
The roster context matters, because Toronto already lost Bo Bichette and still needs steady offense around Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Springer staying productive gives the lineup a stabilizer, especially when the schedule gets ugly in May.
Matheson also floated the idea that the next CBA cycle could complicate how a late-career star chooses to finish his run.
That's not a threat, it's just a reminder that timing can mess with personal milestones.
The other issue is that the Blue Jays have quite a few outfielders entering the final year of their deal this upcoming season which means they will need to make some big decisions.
This is not the first time this idea has been brought up that it would be Springer's final year in Toronto due to his age.
Toronto should keep the door open without forcing it, because a short extension could make sense if Springer embraces DH and stays healthy.
