Jesus Sanchez's brief run with the Diamondbacks is already over.

Arizona is designating him for assignment ahead of Friday's game against the Padres, manager Torey Lovullo confirmed to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert.

The move clears a roster spot for a catcher call-up after Gabriel Moreno exited Friday's game with a "tender" left hamstring.

Moreno's injury doesn't look serious. Lovullo said the plan is for him to DH today after scoring from first on a bases-clearing double before being replaced behind the plate ahead of the seventh inning.

James McCann will start today's game catching, with Adrian Del Castillo expected as the Triple-A call-up serving as his backup.

Why Sanchez never got a real chance to spark anything

Sanchez managed just two hits in 16 plate appearances during his short Arizona stint, doing little to address the team's ongoing struggles against right-handed pitching.

Since he was claimed off waivers from Toronto less than two weeks ago, after the Sept. 1 postseason eligibility cutoff, he was never going to be eligible for Arizona's playoff roster anyway.

That dropped his season-wide wRC+ to 99, a real fall from the 105 wRC+ and .260 average he posted with Toronto across 299 plate appearances.

Most of that Blue Jays success came early in the season. Over his last 111 plate appearances combined between Toronto and Arizona, he's hit just .168 with a .253 slugging mark.

He also missed about a month with a sprained right ankle and struggled badly defensively in Toronto's outfield, the exact combination that led the Blue Jays to DFA him earlier this month.

Arizona's waiver claim was always a flier, hoping a change of scenery might spark something. It didn't.

With just two games left in the season, Sanchez won't get claimed again and will likely be released once he clears waivers. He's arbitration-eligible for a third and final time this winter, and Arizona has little reason to give him a raise on his $6.8 million salary.

Sanchez now heads into free agency early, likely facing a market limited to minor-league offers as he tries to rebuild his value after this rough season.

Arizona, meanwhile, keeps its own playoff hopes alive on a six-game winning streak, sitting a game back of the Phillies for the final NL wild-card spot and holding the tiebreaker.
