Just as the Blue Jays were feeling invincible with their new rotation depth, the harsh reality of pitching struck Bowden Francis.

The news that the right-hander will undergo UCL reconstruction surgery and miss the entire 2026 campaign is a gut punch.
Francis (Drafted 7th Round, 2017 by Brewers) was looking to turn the page on a nightmare 2025 season where injuries and command issues inflated his ERA to 6.05.
We all remember the magic of 2024, where he flirted with no-hitters and looked like a legitimate mid-rotation weapon.
He came into this spring with a chip on his shoulder, ready to fight for a spot as the "swingman" or the first guy up from Buffalo.
Instead, his season is over before it began, and he faces the grueling 12-to-14 month road of rehab associated with Tommy John surgery.
This loss might not seem catastrophic on paper given the additions of Dylan Cease and Shane Bieber, but true fans know better.
In a 162-game grind, you never have enough pitching, and Francis was the ultimate insurance policy.

The margin for error in the rotation just got significantly tighter

Ross Atkins built this roster to survive injuries, but losing your QB2 always makes the room nervous.
Now, the pressure ramps up immensely on guys like Cody Ponce and Eric Lauer to stay healthy and effective.
There is no longer a "Bowden Francis safety net" to bail out the rotation if a starter goes down with a blister or fatigue.
It forces the organization to dip into their prospect capital earlier than expected, potentially rushing a young arm.
For Francis personally, this is heartbreaking; he is a grinder who has battled for everything he’s earned in this game.
He has the mental toughness to conquer this rehab, but it doesn't make the pill any easier to swallow today.
We are sending all our positive vibes to number 44 for a speedy recovery, because we haven't seen the last of him.
